Plant Information

Also known as Mentha balsamea, Peppermint is Indigenous to Europe and the Middle East and can grow almost anywhere. Discovered in the 17th century, this hybrid mint is a cross between watermint and spearmint and produces no seeds and is usually sterile. Growing up to 3 feet with purplish stems and light violet flowers, it is considered invasive in Australia, the Galápagos Islands, New Zealand, and the United States in the Great Lakes region.

Peppermints layers of minty sweetness are a great refreshing aroma that is known to work to improve concentration, focus thoughts, eliminate heavy thoughts of grief or sorrow, lift the mind, spirit and relieve sore muscles. The whole plant is put through a steam distillation process to extract the oil and is a great one to mix with other oils in the diffuser.

This essential oil distilled from the bark, Peppermint is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and rubefacient and is used in the treatment of rheumatism, bladder infections, neuralgia. Peppermint also an antiseptic, astringent, disinfectant, diuretic, febrifuge, insecticide and tonic so add a few drops to homemade organic cleaning agents.

Usages

Repel ants and flies by Spraying Peppermint Oil diluted in the water around windows and doors in the home. Add a few drops to a spray bottle or in a dish soap bottle mix:
1 1/2 cups baking soda.
1/2 cup liquid Castile soap.
2 tablespoons white vinegar.
2 tablespoons water.

In aromatherapy, Peppermint oil is an emotional powerhouse as it aids in calming, allowing the brain and body to relax and focus.

Almond, Coconut, Grapeseed, Sunflower, or Evening Primrose oils are great oils to dilute Peppermint and may be applied to relieve aches and pains, including menstrual and abdominal pain as well as muscle spasms.

Add a couple drops to a coconut oil and baking soda paste and brush your teeth and gums.

Diffusing Peppermint Oil while studying can reduce anxiety and boost concentration.

For cleaning, combined with baking soda, liquid castile soap, and warm water before applying surfaces such as countertops, sinks, and bathtubs. Allow the paste to sit on the surface for a few minutes, then scrub with a sponge and rinse off with water. Spearmint Essential Oil can be combined with vinegar and water to clean floors.

Safety

Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. If skin irritation does occur, wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. Experts do not recommend using essential oil if you have a terminal illness, cancer, epilepsy or a number of other conditions. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended.
