Plant Information

Used spiritually for thousands of years, the Indian Sandlewood tree is considered sacred. The oil is distilled from Santalum album in the Mysore region of India, and the oil is appreciated for its woody, sweet, yet smooth aroma which is known to relax, calm and ground.  As one of the few true aphrodisiacs, it is an amazing fixant to any perfume blend. Added to a carrier, can be used on skin and allow its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal properties go to work. The antibacterial, Sandalwood can also be used as an organic cleaning agent.

This enchanting aroma may soothe tension, nervousness, depression, or  hyperactivity and is a common oil to keep on hand. During the Sui Dynasty in 581 AD, Tibetan monks carried Sandalwood in medicine bags to treated respiratory disorders and help relax the mind and body.  The wood was imported and used it in medicine, for embalming and in ritual burning to venerate Ancient Egyptians gods. Sandalwood was also used by Buddhists to alleviate depression, anxiety and insomnia. This amazing tree take 30 years to grow!  May your usage of Sandalwood be mindful, as it has become nearly extinct due to severe population decline and genetic impoverishment after decades of mismanagement and over-harvesting.
