Terpenes

Terpenes

Medicine Flower offers terpenes that enhance the effect of concentrates, isolates and extracts, and can be used to create custom profiles, and are beneficial in enhancing topicals, edibles and fragrances.

Our Terpene Blends are created to specifically mimic the beneficial qualities, aroma and flavor profile of the plant strains they are named after. Adding terpenes to various products can provide enhanced benefits without the addition of regulated or illegal products.

Our Solvent Free Terpene Blends are derived from individual isolated terpenes. These organic terpenes are extracted from natural plant sources. For example, L-Limonene, D-Limonene, Myrcene, Alpha Pinene, Beta Pinene, and Citronellol can be extracted from other plants like pine, lemons, hops, and oranges. Though they are chemically the same, they are not from flower, and they do not impart flower-like strain flavorings. But, they do impart flower-like effect by themselves and in combination with one another.

Understanding Terpenes

Terpenes are organic compounds that are produced by a large variety of plants and are what give each flower, herb and fruit its own unique scent and flavor. We experience terpenes in daily life constantly. Smell a rose, zest a lemon, pick some fresh basil, eat a peach, open a jar of herbs - what makes each of these experiences memorable is the blend of terpenes present in each plant!

A simple way of understanding aromatic terpene compounds would be to liken them to building blocks created by plants. Over 20,000 different terpenes make up these building blocks and are combined by nature in countless ways to create complex blends such as peppermint, lavender or sandalwood, and are not unique to only one type of plant. For example, the terpene compound known as Alpha-pinene can be derived from many different natural sources, a few of them being coniferous trees, rosemary, eucalyptus, and sage. Specific terpene structure is always consistent regardless of the source it was isolated from. There is virtually no difference in the structure/benefit of a terpene isolated from a pine tree or a cannabis plant.

When a plant such as a fruit or herb is consumed, the way it tastes, smells and makes us feel is largely influenced by the synergistic interaction of terpenes present within it. Terpenes are frequently mentioned in connection with the phenomenon referred to as the “entourage effect." This is created by mixing botanical compounds with terpenes that then magnify the overall effect of the benefits of the plant's individual components.
