Plant Information
Used across history in Asia and India as an incense and in perfumes Benzoin is an excellent fixative for perfume and soap blends with a rich, sweet, sensual note.
Benzoin incense was also believed to help, “drive out evil spirits”. It is a balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees in the genus Styrax primarily native to Thailand, Sumatra, and Java. Sometimes it’s called gum benzoin or gum benjamin, though in other countries like India they refer to it as loban, which is a generic term for frankincense-type incense, e.g., fragrant tree resin. Used for centuries, it serves in incenses, perfumes, soaps, cough medicine, skin care, wound care, beverage flavoring and more. It is revered for adding it’s sweet and rich notes to any and all usages.
Usages
A good essential oil for use in a diffuser and for a sweet, pleasant, soothing aroma in massage oils.
Mix with hot water and use as a steam bath and inhale the essence for minor irritation of nose, throat, and airways.
Use as a mouthwash made from the tincture as it may treat canker sores, cold sores, thrus, and other wounds or inflammation of the mucous membranes.
Protect wounds and minor sores from irritation and infection. Just mix a few drops in a carrier oil and put on the spot.
Safety
Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. If skin irritation does occur, wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. Experts do not recommend using essential oils if you have a terminal illness, cancer, epilepsy or a number of other conditions. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended. Our oil is therapeutic grade, however we do not recommend any oils be used internally unless on the advice of a medical professional.
