Plant Information

The inherent properties of bay leaves have caused it to be celebrated by civilizations across the ages. It is a versatile plant, and has been used as the theme of lore and myths from cultures out of many periods of history. Many people have always sought after it for its unique applications. In antiquity, the Greeks and the Romans believed the herb to be highly prized and regarded it as a symbol of peace and protection. Scholars point to the plant having originated in the Asia Minor region, and from there people distributed it to all over the Mediterranean region and other parts of Asia. There was a vast drying of the Mediterranean several thousand years ago that replaced the Laurel forests with more drought-tolerant plant communities, though there can be found remnants of these Laurel forests in areas where conditions permit such as the mountains of southern Turkey, southern Spain, north-central Portugal, and the Canary Islands.

Safety

Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. It is a concern that bay leaf may slow down the central nervous system when combined with medication such as anesthesia used during and after surgery. Therefore it is recommended to stop use of bay leaf at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended. Our oil is therapeutic grade, however we do not recommend any oils be used internally unless on the advice of a medical professional.
