Plant Information

Commonly referred to as cherry birch or black birch, Birch essential oil has a sharp, sweet, caphoraceous aroma similar to wintergreens. Its purifying, uplifting scent, encourages detoxification of the body when inhaled or applied topically, which can be healing when overworked and create comfort and relaxation. These trees reach about sixty feet tall with a trunk up to two feet in diameter and there are over one hundred estimated species of Birch trees which grow in Asia, Europe and North America. The bark produces a powerful component(methyl salicylate) that gives it the strong wintergreen aroma.

Usages

Birch oil is also an antiseptic, astringent, disinfectant, diuretic, febrifuge, insecticide and tonic so add a few drops to homemade organic cleaning agents. Add a drop to some a cap full of vinegar and water in a spray bottle or in a dish soap bottle mix:
1 1/2 cups baking soda
1/2 cup liquid Castile soap
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons water

Blend a few drops of oil into a cream for sprains, sore, achy muscles and joints.
Use cream on arthritis and rheumatism for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties
Drink a drop in water or hot tea for the treatment of fevers, stomach aches and lung ailments.

Safety

Birch essential oil can potentially toxic - contains methyl salicylate, (the active ingredient in aspirin) so is not to be used by anyone with liver problems or who is using blood thinning medication, children or the elderly.
Birch essential oil kills fungal infections, bacterial infections and helps protect the skin but it does come with some danger because the salicyclic acid that gives it those protective powers can be dangerous.
Also, to be avoided whilst pregnant or breastfeeding.

Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. If skin irritation does occur, wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. Experts do not recommend using essential oil if you have a terminal illness, cancer, epilepsy or a number of other conditions. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended. Our oil is therapeutic grade, however we do not recommend any oils be used internally unless on the advice of a medical professional.
