Plant Information
Clary Sage, the giant of the sage family that is believed to be a native of Europe, has tall pink and purple flowers which perfume the summer air with their fragrance. The leaves and flowers are sticky with their musky aromatic oils and when steam distilled, transform into a clean, sweet and light oil. While it is a close relative of the common garden sage, there are marked differences in the two plant varieties. Historically, Clary Sage has been highly praised as a medicinal plant. It is known to be helpful for the eyes, as both a cleanser and to protect and improve vision. Even the word “clary” is a variant of clarity denoting the effect of clarity of vision from this plant.
Another common use for Clary Sage is as a traditional flavoring in muscatel wine and is also referred to as muscatel oil. Today it is also used in flavoring wines, vermouths, liqueurs and tobacco products. It is used as a fixative in fragrances.
A warm aroma, with a medium strength musky, herbal middle base fragrance, it has been used for centuries as a perfume, and is lovely applied directly to the skin as it is calming and soothing. In fact, it's often used as a fixative in fragrance. During the Middle Ages, Clary Sage was used to sooth skin, and was known to promote relaxation and restful sleep.
Today, science has given us a clearer understanding of exactly why Clary Sage may provide balancing, soothing and relaxation, due to the presence of the main chemical component of Clary Sage which is linalyl acetate, part of the esters group.
Woman may benefit from it’s restorative and balancing effects during their cycles. Vaporizing or using it directly on the skin or in a massage oil may help in the alleviation of symptoms of menstruation or menopause by calming the mind and bringing balance to the body.
Depression and anxiety in our busy, fast pace lives affects many. Clary Sage acts as a nervine and can assist in bringing peace and calm by the reduction of stress and promotes relaxation for those dealing with chronic anxiety. Because of its mood enhancement, it can act as an antidepressant and may be helpful in the reduction of depression. Concentration is enhanced because of it’s calming effect, and it has even been shown to be helpful for those battling addictions.
Clary Sage has components that kill bacteria and fungi, it prevents and curbs the growth and spread of bacterial infections. Studies show that clary sage essential oil is particularly beneficial in curing bacterial infections affecting the digestive system. It is equally effective in inhibiting bacteria from entering our body through the ingestion of tainted food or water. Its antiseptic qualities protect the body from becoming infected from wounds and prevent sepsis and can be very helpful during surgery recovery or other types of wounds that are typically hot spots for infections. It has been known to kill Tetanus germs on contact by the topical application of Clary Sage.
Clary Sage and it also can assist the body in the reduction of inflammation and is helpful to the digestive system. It maintains the health of the stomach by boosting and regulating secretions of digestive juices, thereby preventing stomach disorders and stimulating efficient absorption of nutrients, digestion and regulation of the elimination system.
Another well-known property of clary sage oil is as an aphrodisiac, that boosts libido and can improve sexual desire. It can help in treating frigidity, psychological problems resulting in loss of libido, and even impotency.
